Have you seen the new Helensburgh playground – now with added artworks by local students?
Last year, children from two Helensburgh-based schools and one pre-school had the opportunity to design a playground and create artworks to celebrate the area’s history.
The ribbon on Charles Harper Playground was officially cut last year, with more than 140 students from Helensburgh Public School, Holy Cross Catholic School and Helensburgh Pre-school on hand to mark its opening.
Since then, the artworks have been installed at the playground, and everyone is invited to see the creativity of local students and artist Celeste Coucke. Coucke worked with students in a series of design sessions that melded local history lessons with art classes, including one which looked at the scientific process cyanotype photograms, to create the works. The artworks take a series of forms:
“The Charles Harper Playground is a real labour of love created by local students, artist Celeste Coucke and the Local Historic Society. Council is committed to involving children and the broader community to help design our playgrounds. It is always a pleasure to create something special that reflects the local community,” Wollongong City Lord Mayor Councillor Gordon Bradbery AM said.
“I’d like to give a special thank you to the schools who worked with Council staff to make sure that children’s voices were at the heart of this community space.’’
The playground was made possible by the hard work of local students from Helensburgh Public School, Holy Cross Catholic School and Helensburgh Pre-school.
