The Ultimate 'Facial' for the Busy Mama!? And you can find in the Illawarra (and do it in thirty mins!)

Naomi Cotterill Thu 28 June 18

The ultimate facial for the busy mama!? No really, it takes 30mins only and after you may be reminded of how you skin used to look before the kids stole your sleep, check this out…

As mothers, we regularly have OODLES of time to spend on getting pampered. “Sure, book me in for that 3.5 hours facial, I’ve got nothing but time,” we often say. Ok, so that’s a big, fat lie.

What time we have is minimal so when we go for a beauty treatment, we want fast and effective. Think minimal time, maximum impact. It’s one of the (many) reasons the HydraFacial, at new kid on the beauty block, Thrive Skin Clinic, in Bulli (less than 15mins north of Wollongong), caught our eye.

Despite it being called a 'facial', it's actually a medical grade resurfacing treatment that takes only 30 minutes, with no downtime and promises big results in the time it takes for your kid to complete a swimming lesson (or trash your kitchen, take your pick). Because we’re super thorough in our investigating, we selflessly checked out the HydraFacial to see if it lived up to the hype (spoiler alert: it does).

On the topic of 'beauty hype' for a second, take comfort that Thrive is owned and managed by an experience female GP (who is also a mum of three...) and the clinic is staffed by experienced registered nurses and dermal therapists who are passionate about skin and focused on on offering only evidence based, effective and safe treatments.

So, performed by a qualified and experienced aesthetician, the HydraFacial is all about pulling the bad stuff out (dead skin, impurities, blackheads, whiteheads, blocked pores) while putting a whole heap of goodness back in (think: anti-ageing serum, antioxidants and hyaluronic acid.)

While many facial treatments target a specific concern, the HydraFacial is a real multi-tasker. It’s useful for every skin type and can help improve:

• Fine lines + Wrinkles

• Elasticity + Firmness

• Even Tone + Vibrancy

• Skin Texture

• Brown Spots

• Oily + Congested Skin

• Enlarged Pores

It’ll also cook dinner while pouring you a glass of wine (we wish!).

Thrive Skin Clinic is one of the few clinics in NSW to offer the treatment and it’s proved to be super popular, and after experiencing it for ourselves, we can completely understand why.

The Hydrafacial can be done as a one off, say a day or 2 before a big event (wedding, formal, party etc) for baby soft glowing skin, but if performed every month you'll get some serious ongoing gains too (note this is not just an 'up-sell' - it is because our skin regenerates every 30-40 days so a monthly Hydrafacial encourages healthy glowing skin every cycle. Thrive help you be able to splurge on a monthly Hydrafacial if the finances will allow, by offering up to a 40% discount for regular treatments - oh yeah!).

The process itself is simple with three key steps; deep cleanse + peel, extract + hydrate, fuse + protect. After manually cleansing the skin, a tailored exfoliating solution containing both glycolic and salicylic acids (well known for their spot and dead cell slaying abilities) is paired with a spiral tipped suction device and used to ‘vacuum’ your face. Think gentle suction from forehead to jawline that deeply cleanses your pores and removes any nasties lurking within.

It also encourages the skin to naturally regenerate, letting shiny new cells through while banishing the older, dry ones. The suction strength is then increased to target specific problem areas (i.e. areas of congestion, blackheads or other blockages). Skin is then infused with a nourishing serum that combines hyaluronic acid and potent antioxidants. Hyaluronic is the whizz kid for adding moisture and ‘plumpness’ back into your skin (see ya later, fine lines and wrinkles), while antioxidants are all about cleaning up free radicals and showing them the door.

You can also choose from a range of different boosters to add to the treatment to be infused at the same time as the serum. A quick slather of moisturiser and SPF and you’re done and dusted, with an ever so slightly pink but super glowy face (some people with very sensitive skin may experience some redness but it settles quickly. And the best bit? The ‘proper’ results show themselves in the coming days and weeks so it only gets better! Yippee!

It’s a firm five stars from this reviewer who currently is sporting baby soft, glowing skin and can’t wait to go back again and (try) and have the results of 6 years of minimal sleep reversed. For more information about the HydraFacial, visit Thrive Skin Clinic :)
